Fresh flowers and foliage look their best when they are used in their natural season, and spring heralds the start of a new year of beautiful blooms.

The first springtime festival of flowers arrives in February with Valentine’s Day. This celebration originated in 18th-century England and evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards. These days a bouquet of red roses has become symbolic of Valentines but there’s plenty of other unique and distinctive design ideas to show that special someone how you feel. I particularly like using more seasonal flowers such as anemones with their crushed silk petals in jewel–like cerise pink and rich reds; rose-like ranunculus in a rainbow of shades or delicate Hellebores in blush whites and dusky pinks, all perfectly summing up seasonality.

With springtime’s new growth beginning to appear and the feeling of warmer and longer days in March, it’s time to think about seasonal spring flowers for Mother’s Day. Spring flowering bulbs such as tulips, hyacinths and daffodils are by now readily available and make lovely Mother’s day gifts, either planted in pretty pots, vintage tea cups or rustic tin buckets. Hand tied bouquets of bright yellow daffodils look stunning ‘en masse in a simple jug, and a posy of smaller, beautifully scented Narcissi in yellows, lemons and soft creams will fill a room with fragrance.

April will bring an even wider range of flowers, with later varieties of flowering bulbs, flowering shrubs like camellia, rosemary, viburnum and the start of stunning blossom on cherry and lilac. Easter celebrations usually fall in April; the spirit of Easter is all about hope, love and new beginnings, perfectly in line with gifts and arrangements of bright spring flowers. White and yellow flowers are very popular at Easter, as are details like handmade painted eggs, willow wreaths and natural feathers.

“Thanks so much; mum loved her gift arrangement planted with spring bulbs, especially as she can keep using the lovely wooden trug out in her garden”
